A Nation of Immigrants

A Nation of Immigrants 1996—by Mary Anne Simpson

In search of place,
Intolerance masked in obsessions,
I shed, he shed, we shed patriotic flesh for it.
You said, he said, she said, they say,
Them is us and we are they who persecute outsiders,
Who by adversity or want or need in search of opportunity.
Our enemy is our genesis.
A nation, whose cornerstones are set in adversity, requires tolerance,
By words, actions and sight, the divine punishment separation.
Our commonality obscured by nuance of language clothed in I.
The emotion at the core of each being, a song, flag waving, smells
Unclouded by life's experiences, so personal and sensitive..
Revulsion, compassion, attraction take clues from patchwork overlay.
Often, undetectable by the eye, confused, symbolizing something.
God, Divine, Buddha, Allah, Yahweh,
Joy in diversity, awareness of time,
Humanity in harmony for our perpetuity.
